The Department is involved in preparing policies, programs and projects with direct or indirect impacts on Native people, in the areas under its jurisdiction. It ensures that all such interventions are consistent with the government’s orientations.

The Department also works with the Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones, a State-owned agency whose primary responsibility is to act as a liaison between the Native people and the gouvernement du Québec.
