Québec, already known as a world leader in the field of hydro-electricity, is entering a new phase in the development of its hydro-electric potential. Three new generating stations have recently been brought into service, and a fourth is under construction:
- Eastmain-1 (480 MW)
- Péribonka (385 MW)
- Chute-Allard/Rapide-des-Cœurs (139 MW)
- Eastmain-1-A-Sarcelle-Rupert (918 MW) (under construction)
Major projects
Québec’s 2006-2015 Energy Strategy opened the way to the further development of major hydroelectric generating capacity. The pace of development of Québec’s water resources will equal that of the second phase of the Baie James project, which established Québec’s reputation in this field. The Québec Government will launch a number of major hydro-electricity generating projects with a total production potential of 4,500 MW. These are important initiatives that will guarantee Québec’s energy security and provide sufficient flexibility to attract new wealth-creating industries and consolidate its place on export markets. Work on the project at La Romaine (1,550 MW) on the Côte-Nord region has already begun, and the power station will begin to supply electricity gradually, starting in 2014. The Québec Government has other projects, and under the Plan Nord, it has announced that 3,000 MW in extra capacity will be added by 2035.
A major economic boost
Hydro-electric development is extremely important for Québec’s economy. Thousands of workers and dozens of local communities will profit directly from these huge undertakings. Québec as a whole will be stronger as a result of these projects, which will benefit workers, their families and their communities.
The Government’s actions will generate over $50 billion in investment in renewable energy, helping to create or maintain the equivalent of 240,000 jobs.
Hydro-electricity is a plentiful and renewable resource. Québec has undertaken to develop it in strict compliance with the principles of sustainable development, and with due respect for the communities affected. In addition, hydro-electricity generating projects are subject to rigorous and systematic environmental impact assessment procedures.
