Wind Energy Development: a Sustainable, Responsible Choice for Québec

Print Version (PDF Format, 260 Kb)

Wind energy development is flourishing in Québec, and the Québec Government firmly intends to develop the sector’s full potential.

Québec is already acknowledged as a world reference in hydro-electric development, and is now positioning itself as a North American leader in the wind energy sector. This environmentally-responsible choice is a source of pride for Québec!

A flourishing industry

The rapid growth of the wind energy sector throughout the world has produced a dynamic industry, within which Québec plays a leading role.

Québec’s wind energy potential is considerable. Between now and 2015, the Government will develop some of this potential by calling for bids for the production of 4,000 MW of wind energy, including 500 MW reserved for projects promoted by local or Native communities. This will provide an excellent opportunity to use hydro-electricity and wind energy in tandem, and to stimulate economic development in local communities.

The goal is an ambitious one, but can be achieved thanks to the ability of Hydro-Québec’s network to incorporate this new energy source, and also thanks to the progress made in developing an industrial wind energy sector in Québec. A number of specialist firms in Québec have established a position in this market and have mastered wind energy technologies.

In addition, business partnerships have been set up with European firms working at the international level, which have invested in facilities in Québec to produce wind generator components.

Major economic spin-offs and a strict
implementation framework

Québec is in a strong position to generate wind energy successfully and economically and to benefit from the spin-offs.

The Québec Government intends to guarantee as many benefits as possible for Québec’s economy and to create both wealth and jobs. It has also clearly stated its intention to take environmental factors into account and involve local communities in building a future that reflects their interests. This is a winning approach for the contractors concerned, as well as for Québec’s economy, the host communities and the environment as a whole.

Social acceptability is an essential condition for the development of wind energy projects in Québec. The key success factors include communication with the general public and cooperation with all stakeholders.
